Vet Practice Celebrates Management Coup
Gatehouse Veterinary Group is celebrating the success of one of their home grown protégés.
Louise Marshall has been awarded the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM) as a result of passing gruelling exams at the end of last year. She was one of only two candidates in the whole of the UK to be presented with her certificate at the VPMA Congress earlier this year (Jan 28). She was also one of the finalists for the prestigious Pet Plan awards for Practice Manager of the Year! View the nominees here.
Louise says her dedication and love of animals began at Gatehouse when she was just 13 years old, but it was some 10 years later before she officially joined the practice 20 years ago as a trainee veterinary nurse: “I began by helping partner, Simon Thomas MRCVS, on Saturday mornings when I was still at school. However after leaving school I was unsure of my career, so I went off travelling. “It wasn’t until I returned to the UK that I realised I could actually make a career of what I loved – working with animals – so in 1996 I joined the practice, taking my Veterinary Nurse (VN) exams as I progressed,” she adds.
Partner, Simon Thomas acknowledges: “To pass the CVPM you need to have had significant experience in practice; Louise’s cumulative hard work as a VN has played a significant part in her success. Today Gatehouse Veterinary Group has grown to incorporate three practices, at Allerton, Haworth and Bingley, serviced by some 10 vets and 15 veterinary nurses, Louise has been an integral part of that development, achieving both for the practice and for her.
Louise reflects: “2 years ago I attained a level 5 in management which enabled me to take the CVPM exam, giving me more knowledge and understanding of people and business management. In achieving the CVPM it has helped me analyse the business needs, client needs and move the practice. I was so pleased to also be nominated for practice manage of the year, but I couldn’t have done it without the great team of people we have here at gatehouse”
Married, with 2 children at primary school, Louise has juggled her way through motherhood and veterinary exams to her latest triumph. Partner, Simon Thomas concludes: “We are very proud of what Louise has achieved. The exam is extremely tough – she has studied hard, but also she has been able to draw on a wealth of experience as the Gatehouse Veterinary Group has developed.”
